I read about a food memories meme over at Farmgirl Fare. Memes (pronounced meem) is an alteration of “mimeme” and is defined by Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary as “an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person.” This will be a list of five of my childhood memories involving food. I hope you will join in by leaving five of your memories in the comments. I think it’s a fun way to get to know you all better. Here are mine:
1. The first thought that came to mind when I read about this meme was my mother’s Cabbage Casserole. It was one of my favorite dishes that she made, but I don’t remember her making it very often. It seems like she made it for church suppers – maybe my dad didn’t like it. It had ground beef, cabbage, and tomato soup. I’m not sure what else was in it, but I can’t replicate it.
2. Ice Cream Suppers – each year at church we had an ice cream supper in August. Everybody brought either homemade ice cream or homemade baked goods. It was basically a sugar orgy – and I loved it!
3. TV dinners were special. When my father was out of town, which wasn’t very often, my mom would let us eat tv dinners. You know, salisbury steak or fried chicken. I thought they were delicious and looked forward to them even though we didn’t get to eat them in front of the tv.
4. Eating sugar sandwiches. We never really had food available to eat between meals, but there were times in high school that I was so hungry after school that I would take a piece of bread, spread margarine on it, sprinkle sugar on top and eat it.
5. Having to choose between a soft drink or ice cream during snack time at summer camp. We had to choose one. We couldn’t have both, and it was always a struggle whether to get an Eskimo Pie or fudgesicle or a Dr. Pepper or YooHoo.
Wow. Once I got going, there were so many more than five and it was hard to decide which ones to record. I still have a tremendous sweet tooth if there is chocolate involved. Now it’s your turn – who’s next?
1. Well, along the lines of your tv dinners…a lot of times when they had Men’s Supper at the church, for us mother would fry hamburger patties and then pour a can of pork and beans over them. I guess its the burger grease that gives the beans a really good flavor.Every once in a while i still fix this for myself.
2. Southern Maid Donuts!! What can i say?? Deliscious!! We used to try to go get them when they were making them and watch them pour all the yummy icing over them and then go home and eat them hot.
3.Camp Alabama. I dont remember be limited in the snacks we could get. I do remember thay had sodas, ice cream, and candy. My favorite was to buy a bottle of soda (dont remember what kind) and pour a bag of peanuts in.
4. One of my favorite homemade meals was the “meatless” meal we had in the summertime: purple hull peas,”fried” corn (fresh corn cut off the cob and cooked down in water and bacon grease),fresh
sliced tomatos and cantaloupe….and to top it off, grandmother Owsley”s “dog” bread. Most people call it hot water corn bread. I never did know where the term “dog” bread came from.
5. Cherry coke from the soda fountain of the drug store. This was always a special treat. Although I remember loving this…today i cant stand coke.
Heather, I also loved the Cabbage Casserole. It seems like Wendy showed me the recipe a while back but i never made it. I only remember the burger, cabbage and tomato soup.
Sorry i never got around to my 5 weird things……..too hard to think under pressure.
Mmmhmm. Those meatless meals were great, as well as the Southern Maid doughnuts. Now that we have a Krispy Kreme here, some people like those better. But to me, there’s nothing better than a hot Southern Maid!
Thanks for commenting!
I think I am going to do a recipe search for that cabbage casserole. My hub said he would like to have cabbage rolls for supper sometime- that seems way too involved to do, but I might could handle a casserole. Might just start a memory.
I don’t have time for this, but as each of my sister’s talk about these things, I have a distinct memory associated with it.
I DO have the cabbage casserole recipe. I wrote it on a card years ago when Mom was still alive.
How much is it worth to you, hmmmm?
I’ll post my list Friday. Busy working today.
Now, now BW, you can’t hold a recipe hostage. Out with it!
I agree, no holding recipes hostage. Maybe she is a bit “off” becasue of her tooth!
1. custard. my mom makes custard when I’m sick. major comfort food.
2. my Uncle Ralph’s buttermilk fried chicken. I don’t recall much about the circumstances, but I know he soaked that chicken for at least a day in buttermilk (real buttermilk) and then fried it in butter. I’ve never had chicken like that again.
3. cheese & raisins melt. Take raisins, scatter them on a plate. Slice or shred mozerella cheese, cover the raisins with the cheese. generously. put plate in microwave. cook till cheese is melted and bubbly. Let cool just enough to not burn yourself as you devour. Fingers only please. no utensils allowed.
4. blue berries in a hat. We went hiking and as we went up the mountain there were blueberries along the path. We ate them as snacks on the way up, and on the way back we convinced my father to let us use his fishing hat as a basket. When we got home with all those fresh blueberries, my mom made us a batch of blueberry icecream
5. black cherries on the stoop. mother used to buy us a flat of blackcherries once a year. they almost never made it into the house. We’d sit out on the stoop and just enhale most of the flat of cherries, spitting the seeds into the yard as we went. My father hated those seeds…….
I popped over from eTrish’s blog. I like the way your mind works.
I would love to have tasted that chicken! I might have to talk my husband into trying that – he’s the meat cooker in the family.
Cheese and raisins sounds interesting…
Love, love, love blueberries and cherries. I inhale cherries when we have them in the grocery store. You must be from up north if you have access to flats of fresh cherries. My mom was from Michigan. I remember visiting a cherry orchard there as a child.
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you’ll come back.
Nope. Been in Atlanta, GA since 2nd grade. But we have a wonderful farmer’s market and they always have black cherries.
The cheese & raisins thing was something I made up as a kid. And I loved it so I still do it occasionally.
I have been trying to remember the food I loved as a child. Actually, I didn’t really like food as a child. Eating was more of a necessity than an enjoyment. My mom was a wonderful cook, but I just didn’t enjoy food. I always wished I could eat like the “Jetsons” and just pop a pill in my mouth. I guess if I had to post a favorite memory it would be coming home after school. My mom would always have homemade cookies, chocolate chip, fudge cookies, sugar cookies, etc. If you looked at me now, you can difinitely tell I enjoy food “weigh” more than is needed.
